I've Gone Dog Crazy

I think I want a dog. I mean, I really think I want a dog! I'm trying so hard to convince myself I don't want a dog. But I do. I want a dog! I've never had a dog, and for some reason, it seems like I should have one. The dog I'm thinking about is a Mini Whoodle. Have any of you heard of that? It's a cross between a mini poodle and a soft coated wheaten terrier. It's so cute! It doesn't shed. And it's supposed to have a great temperament and be good with kids. I'd love to meet one in real life. If anyone knows of a mini whoodle in the Chicago area, please let me know.
So what do you think? Have I gone crazy, or should I get a dog? Can anyone talk me out of this?

You won't hear me talking you out of it! I love my dog to bits, irritating quirks and all. The whoodle looks like a real cutie. And since you're already a parent thrice over you don't need the "responsibility lecture." (My mom assures me that dealing with my dog is excellent parenting practice!) I say, go for it! :-)

Brenda, I am the proud papa of the dog pictured in your Blog "I've Gone Dog Crazy" Luna is a special puppy and if you are sitting on the fence, get yourself a mini-Whoodle. Luna is a playful and loving dog who loves to give lots of kisses. She makes us laugh everyday and is already, after five weeks, a beloved member of our family. I have some recent photos of her if you want to send me an email I will forward them on to you. You can email me at michaelgosselin4re@msn.com. Best wishes, Michael

Hey there,
I highly suggest getting a MINI WHOODLE. I recently purchased one from a breeder in Florida "Old Mcdoodle Farm" she is the best! Our puppy was easy to potty train and she is sooo loving and what a cutie!
This breeder does a wonderful job with her puppies so you might want to check her out. Wishing you the best on your search.

Lisa, you sound like everyone else. Nobody is even trying to talk me out of this. And now I'm 100% convinced. Yay!

Michael and Sharon, Thank you so much for contacting me about your mini whoodles! I am definitely looking into Barbara at Old McDoodle Farm. Can't wait to get a puppy!!!

Did you end up getting a Whoodle? We are debating between a whoodle and a mini-whoodle. I have heard that the standard whoodles have a better temperament because standard poodles are calmer and less aggressive than mini poodles. But, I want a small dog. Can't decide! Which breeder did you go with? I was looking at whoodles of raisin tree in michigan. i am in chicago.

Please do not get a dog from Whoodles of Raisin Tree in Michigan. It's a puppy mill! It's a very guarded operation, and they won't let you inside the building where they keep the dogs. She has 25-30 dogs in a single small building. I did not see any dogs outside. They brought one dog out for me to see and it's rear end was covered in feces. It was very aloof and more interested in the fact that it was outside. Another one was extremely hyper. Poor dogs! The office where she meets with clients is dirty, smelly, and full of stuff. I'm very distrurbed and will never do business with this operation. I don't know how she sleeps at night.

Anon, that sounds suspicious. It's good that you did your research. I ended up getting a pup from Old McDoodle farm. It was a very reputable breeder. And we are thrilled with our dog.

I did get a Whoodle from Raisin Tree Farms, in December 2007. I talked to Elaine on the phone several times about her experience level. I think she knows what she's doing. I understand not wanting puppies exposed to the commotion and germs that come with visitors. And I understand wanting to see what's going on behind closed doors. Best would be if there were live cams of what's going on.
Our (standard size) Whoodle Eddie has been spectacular. He was sent in a crate from Michigan to Oregon. When I picked him up at the airport, he was tucked into the back corner of the crate - I had to scoop him out. He immediately warmed up to me and my two boys, and lay on their laps all the way home. We all slept in one bed that first night, with him between us. Despite my fears, he did not go crazy jumping on/off the bed, he didn't pee in the bed - he cuddled into us and immediately we were his pack. We took him to puppy obedience classes, he quickly learned to sit/walk/down/stay. 4.5 yrs later, everyone we encounter remarks about what a cute, fun, well-behaved dog he is - everyone wants to interact with him. He's been completely healthy, and he runs 2 hrs at a time with me in the mountains and off-leash. I never need to worry about him - he's always aware of where I am, and he follows my verbal commands. In town, on leash or not, I say "on by" when there are other dogs, and he goes right by without pulling, sniffing, rushing up, etc. We take him everywhere b/c he's so easy and b/c he's a great size - not too big in the car.

Best of all, he's ALWAYS happy to see us, and happy to do whatever we want him to do. We could not ask for a better dog. I do believe that Raisin Tree Farms is doing some things very well if they are able to create such a dog.

Shannon, your dog sounds awesome. I'm so glad you had a good experience. I have another friend who got a Standard Whoodle from Raisin Tree Farm, and she's a great dog, too.

My whoodle just died after 18 months. He went into kidney failure, had juvenile hip dysplasia and developed lymphoma. I got mine from a supposed rescue in Ocala, FL called Starting Over Refuge. Melissa, the owner is a total scam! Anyhow, I really want another puppy. My daughter is so sad, we miss our baby, and I live in FL. It is 2012, and Brenda, do you still recommend Old McDoodle Farms? How is your dog now? Healthy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. That's really heartbreaking. My dog is now four years old and as cute and wonderful and healthy as ever. Truly the best addition to our family. I highly recommend Old McDoodle Farm.

I realize that the above comments are old and this story is old too, but the fact is that PUPPY MILL Scams are everywhere. If you cannot see the facilities or where the dogs live, walk away. No matter what reasons they give you, walk away and call the Humane society.

A Howell Township woman charged for neglecting more than 90 dogs and puppies was sentenced Thursday by Livingston County Circuit Court to five years of probation for animal cruelty, the Livingston Daily reported.

More than 90 dogs and puppies, multiple adult cats and at least two litters of kittens were rescued in May from Raisin Tree Farm on Suntar Valley Drive in Howell Township where the animals were kept in overcrowded and poor conditions.

Animal control officers sought charges, holding Margaret Elaine Komorny, 76, responsible for not taking care of the neglected animals found on Raisin Tree Farm.

Circuit Judge Michael P Hatty ordered that Komorny not own, possess or control any animals. She was also sentenced to 60 days in jail, which was placed in abeyance, according to the Livingston Daily.
